If you are anything like me, you love a good bargain. I also enjoy being able to make money from items I have lying around. Lot’s of sites will tell you to sell your things online and you can make quick cash, but is it easy to make money on Poshmark?
I keep seeing articles written about girls who have closets full of designer clothes that they are selling on various sites and making thousands while they sleep.
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely cannot relate to this. None of my clothes are designer, or new for that matter. Which leads me to wonder: can an average person sell on Poshmark successfully?
I’m Holly, a stay at home mom of two and I am on a mission to find the best side hustles around. If making money quickly online interests you, check out my blog on 5 ways to make money fast online. If you’re not afraid of a little start up work, I have also explored ways to make really good, sustainable money online.
Since I am just getting started on my Poshmark adventure, I’ll enlist the help of a local, beloved Poshmark expert to help us answer this. She is my cousin, Buffy, but she has been selling on Poshmark for a while and I’d rather hear from a person I know and trust.
What is Poshmark?
Poshmark is an online marketplace and social platform that allows users to buy and sell new or used clothing, shoes, accessories, and other items. They even have an Ikea category. It was founded in 2011 and has gained popularity as a mobile app where individuals can create their virtual closets, list items for sale, and browse or shop from others’ closets.
Users can take photos of their items, upload them to the Poshmark app, and set their own prices. The platform provides a social and interactive shopping experience, allowing users to follow each other, like and share listings, and engage in comments. Transactions are facilitated through the Poshmark platform, providing a level of security for both buyers and sellers.
Poshmark covers a wide range of fashion items, including clothing for men, women, and children, as well as accessories and beauty products. It has become a popular platform for people looking to declutter their closets, find unique fashion items, or make extra income by selling their pre-owned items.
Can anyone sell on Poshmark? How does it work?
Yes, in general, anyone can sell on Poshmark. Poshmark is designed to be an open marketplace, and anyone can create an account to sell their new or used clothing, shoes, accessories, and other fashion items. The platform is accessible to both individuals and businesses.
To start selling on Poshmark, you need to:
-
- Create an Account: You can sign up for a Poshmark account either through the website or the mobile app.
-
- Set Up Your Closet: Once your account is set up, you can create your virtual closet by listing the items you want to sell. This involves taking photos of your items, providing descriptions, and setting prices.
-
- Share and Engage: Poshmark encourages social interaction, so you can follow other users, share their listings, and engage with the community. This can help increase the visibility of your own items.
-
- Handle Transactions: When a buyer purchases an item from your closet, Poshmark facilitates the transaction. They provide shipping labels, and the buyer pays for shipping. Poshmark also handles the financial transaction, and once the buyer receives the item and accepts it, the seller gets paid.
Poshmark deducts $2.95 for sales less than $15, and 20% of the cut from sales of more than $15.
What type of money can you actually make from Poshmark?
This is obviously a tricky question to answer depending on a number of factors: the quality of your items, your pricing strategy, your participation on the app, consistency, networking, photos, etc. etc. etc.
In an article on Financial Buzz, one seller has been able to make over $5,700 selling items she already owned. She notes that paying special attention to your aesthetic on Poshmark is important to creating a cohesive and appealing closet for shoppers. Frame your photos in the same way, have good lighting, and use the same background. She has been super successful in creating a large following (480,000) followers! This means that when she posts new items, they usually get grabbed pretty quickly because so many people are seeing what she posts.
Awesome. But, what if you’re not selling designer goods? I am a stay at home mom and I do not have designer items just laying around my closet. Most of my clothes are from the VV Boutique (Value Village – a thrift store in Canada), Giant Tiger, or Louie’s (also a thrift store in Canada aptly named “Louie’s Good Used Clothing”). What if your items are unique or vintage?
