I have become obsessed with making money online. It started as a fun dream to look into these things, but I never thought I would actually commit to any of them. I wasn’t sure if they were worth my time or if they were even legitimate. Does this sound like you?

Welcome to my side hustle blog! I’m Holly, and I am investigating the best side hustles with a special nod towards moms because I am one and I understand how precious your spare time is. I’m tired of clicking on lists that just generically list things for me to do without giving me realistic expectations about when or (how much) I can expect to start earning. They just scream that I can “earn $5,000 a month doing this!” and then the suggestion is to sell crafts on Etsy. NO shame to anyone doing this, I’m hoping to do it in the future, I just mean that for a beginner, it will take time, effort, and a lot of learning to begin to see any kind of profit.

I’ll break down when you can expect to start making money and give you a realistic idea of what you’ll actually make. I’ve tried some of these things already and am in the process of getting started with others now. I’m not here to clickbait you. I want to set you up to succeed and exceed your financial goals.

Below, I’ve assembled a five of the most stay-at-home-mom (I say this term in a blanket way – it includes all moms, dads, and everyone in between) friendly (and lucrative) ways to make money online. These are jobs that I’ve found that provide the most flexibility and good income potential.

Most of these methods are not make money overnight immediately kinds of hustles. I’ll do another post on those. These are more long term, sustainable ventures that can provide not only fulfillment, but also offer total financial freedom, eventually.

Affiliate Marketing

I do a deep dive on my experience with affiliate marketing here. For now, let’s get the Coles notes version.

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based online marketing strategy where businesses reward affiliates (partners) for driving traffic or sales to the business through the affiliate’s marketing efforts. Affiliates earn a commission for each successful transaction or action generated through their unique affiliate links or promotional activities.

Can anyone do affiliate marketing?

While anyone can start with affiliate marketing, not everyone achieves significant success. It’s a competitive field, and those who invest time in learning, refining their skills, and staying dedicated are more likely to see positive results. If you’re new to affiliate marketing, it’s advisable to educate yourself, start small, and gradually scale your efforts as you gain experience. Those with a large following or presence online often have more success than those who don’t.

In some cases, beginners may see their first affiliate sales within a few weeks if they choose the right products, effectively target their audience, and implement sound marketing strategies. However, it’s more common for it to take several months before significant income is generated.

When will I generate an income as a beginner?

In some cases, beginners may see their first affiliate sales within a few weeks if they choose the right products, effectively target their audience, and implement sound marketing strategies. However, it’s more common for it to take several months before significant income is generated.

It’s important to approach affiliate marketing with realistic expectations and a long-term mindset. Success often comes to those who are patient, persistent, and willing to learn and adapt their strategies based on results. As you gain experience and refine your approach, you’re likely to see improved outcomes over time.

How much can I make?

While it’s challenging to predict specific earnings, some beginners might start earning a few hundred dollars per month within a few months if you implement effective strategies. However, it’s essential to be realistic and recognize that significant income often takes time to build. This is not an overnight money maker (I’ve learned this myself).

Freelance Writing

Freelance writing is a form of self-employment where writers work on a project basis for various clients without being tied to a single employer. Writers create content such as articles, blog posts, copywriting, and more, and they are typically paid per project or word count. They have the flexibility to choose their clients, set their rates, and work from anywhere. It’s a way for writers to offer their skills and services to a diverse range of individuals or businesses on a contractual basis.

Can anyone do freelance writing?

Yes, in theory, anyone with decent writing skills can explore freelance writing. However, success in freelance writing often depends on factors like writing proficiency, understanding the market, networking, and marketing oneself effectively. It’s important to be able to meet client expectations, deadlines, and deliver high-quality content. Having a portfolio or examples of previous work can also be beneficial when seeking freelance writing opportunities. While freelance writing can be accessible to many, it requires dedication, self-discipline, and the ability to adapt to different writing styles and topics.

While I’m not doing freelance writing, I am blogging for myself. If you’re interested in hearing how I was able to get started blogging as an absolute beginner check that out here.

VAs typically work from their own location and communicate with clients through online channels. Their tasks may include managing emails, scheduling appointments, handling data entry, social media management, and other administrative responsibilities. Virtual assistants offer flexibility and allow businesses to access various skills without the need for on-site presence.

However, being a successful virtual assistant requires a specific skill set, including strong organizational skills, attention to detail, good communication abilities, and proficiency in various software and online tools.

While some tasks may not require specialized training, certain areas like graphic design, content creation, or technical support might benefit from specific expertise. Many virtual assistants also choose to specialize in a particular niche to stand out and cater to a specific clientele.

Additionally, having a reliable internet connection, a computer, and the ability to work independently are essential for anyone considering a career as a virtual assistant.

E-Commerce & Etsy

E-commerce, short for electronic commerce, refers to the buying and selling of goods and services over the internet. It involves online transactions between businesses and consumers, where products or services are showcased, ordered, and paid for through various electronic channels. An example would be Amazon KDP.

Etsy is an online marketplace specifically focused on handmade, vintage, and unique items. It provides a platform for independent sellers, including artisans, crafters, and vintage collectors, to showcase and sell their products. Etsy allows users to buy and sell a wide range of creative and handmade goods, providing a unique and diverse marketplace for buyers looking for distinctive items.

Can anyone do it?

Several platforms, such as Shopify, Etsy, and Amazon, make it relatively easy for people to start selling online with minimal technical knowledge. However, achieving sustainable success may require dedication, effort, and a strategic approach.

It’s important to note that while anyone can start a shop online, building a successful e-commerce business can be more complex. Entrepreneurs and sellers often need to understand market trends, implement effective marketing strategies, and provide excellent customer service to stand out in the competitive online marketplace. People who tell you Etsy is totally passive is fibbing! Read more about my past Etsy mistakes here. It takes a lot of research, time and effort to create a successful Etsy business.

When it comes to making money online, this can be one of the most passive ways to do it. ONCE your shop is set up and running. It will take hard (but fun) work to get it up and running.

When will I make money as a beginner?

Consider setting realistic expectations, continuously refining your approach based on feedback and data, and actively seeking ways to improve your business for long-term success in e-commerce.

It’s challenging to provide specific income figures as success in e-commerce is highly variable. Some entrepreneurs generate modest income, while others build highly profitable businesses.
